Have you ever wondered what the best water bottles to choose from are? Well, many people buy them, but not many people consider if they are doing what’s best for their health and the environment when making that choice. That’s just because like most people we feel if we’re buying our products from a legitimate business it must be safe. For instance plastics… Yikes! Well, to our surprise we have to take a deeper look into what we drink from and also how we’re going to use them and dispose of them.
Plastic bottles are made with PET or PETE which is Polyethylene Terephthalate. They are usually labeled with a resin identification code of 1 inside of the recycle icon. We tend to go to our local convenience store and buy up this water. Well, they can still leech antimony and phthalates. They can also build up bacteria as well. So the one thing you don’t want to do is reuse them. It’s only intended for a single use. Then recycle. As for constantly drinking from them, maybe finding a good glass or stainless steel water bottle would be better.
It’s best to know what you can do better for yourself and the environment when you start choosing a special hydration solution just for you. Usually the first things we notice are the style, color, does it have a bite valve, is it easy to clean and you may wonder if it’s leak proof. Well, these are all good things to check out when you’re looking for that special one that fits you. But on the flip side of that, have you ever looked at water bottles and tried to make decisions based on how it can affect your health and the environment? Well, maybe not always right? We’re all guilty, but there’s more information out there to help you make an informed decision.
For health concerns make sure your new water bottle is BPA-free. BPA (Bisphenol A) is a chemical that can mimic the human estrogen hormones and can cause bad effects to your health. Some water bottles were made using this chemical, but when the health hazards became more known the manufacturers stop using BPA to produce them.
As for the environment make sure that if you’re using plastics, use them once and dispose of them properly. Recycling is the best way. Sometimes we don’t take too much concern with how we dispose of them. For instance have you ever seen plastics in the ocean? Well, if they can leech chemicals into our bottled water then they can definitely leech chemicals into the ocean which means the sea life is also being contaminated as well. You never really realize just how bad something like this can be until it’s pointed out.
You’ll notice now when you’re shopping around for a good water bottle that the majority of them are BPA-free. So find a one that is chemical free, safe to drink from, reusable and even dishwasher safe. This is a good way to save money from buying all those plastic water bottles and a better solution for hydration. You may also consider boiling your water at home and storing them in glass jars. This will not only save you some money, but is also a healthier thirst quenching solution.
